Bits of information about my scientific experience.
I graduated in Computer Science at the
University of Catania, Italy, in 2001.
During my MSc thesis I worked at the
STMicorelectronics,
a world leading semiconductor company,
on image compression and JPEG2000, and pre-processing to compression.
My thesis was awarded as one of the three best master theses of 2001
in the Catania site of STMicroelectronics.
In 2002, I moved to Pisa, Italy (University of Pisa
and National Research Council)
for my Ph.D. on automatic 3D-scanning technologies applied to Cultural Heritage.
In this period, I was involved in the restoration of the Michelangelo’s David
(supporting the restorers’ work with tools for visualization, indexing,
and integration of digital data from different sources with the Stanford 3D model of the statue)
and in a project of automatic acquisition and reproduction (rapid prototyping)
of artworks by means of 3D-scanning technologies and an
automatic positioning system (a robot arm). I got my Ph.D. in 2005
with a thesis on automatic 3D model acquisition using a laser scanner.
From 2004 to 2006, I worked at the
University of Trieste, Italy,
as a (sort of) post-doc researcher.
From the beginning of 2006 to the end of 2008 I served as a post-doc
at the University of Catania,
Italy.
I currently hold a permanent position in the research staff of
CoRFiLaC (Ragusa, Italy).
My main research interests include segmentation and analysis of medical and food images,
such as SEM micrographs, X-ray images of dairy products, and various applications to biology.
I am a reviewer for a number scientific international journals and
I am in the program committee of several international conferences.
Master (Italian Laurea) in Computer Science, Università di Catania, 2001.
Thesis title:
Lo Standard Jpeg2000: Applicazioni ed Estensioni
(The Standard Jpeg2000: Applications and Extensions).
Developed at the STMicorelectronics, Catania Site (supervisors:
G. Gallo
and S. Battiato),
awarded as one of the best three theses in the Catania Site of STM in 2001.
Ph.D. degree in Computer Science at the University of Pisa. Thesis title: Automatic Planning and Acquisition of 3D Models and Applications (supervisors: R. Scopigno and P. Cignoni, VCG, ISTI-CNR, Pisa, ITALY).
I currently hold a permanent position in the research staff of CoRFiLaC (Ragusa, Italy).
